Strigi is Eating My Resources

Some time ago, I noticed strigi in the application menu on my kubuntu box at work and I thaught: “Hey what is that, I need to try it”, and went ahead enabling the strigi daemon.

Today I found myself wondering why a simple maven build of mine was taking so long time. I launched top and saw strigi daemon on the top, eating all my CPU. And that was not all. It had been running for about 5 days, and in that time, it had eaten more than 3000 CPU hours. I hurried of to see the status page at strigi:/status, which told me it was “idle”. Hmmm, yeah right. It had now been indexing nearly 7GB (into my home-dir) from well over 2 million documents.

Given that I had completely forgotten about strigi (until it ate all my resources) and did not miss it the 5 days it ran, I quickly disabled it. And I think I will keep it disabled.
